The test of knowing God is revealed in 1 John 1:5-2:5. If you say you know God but do not do His commands, the Bible says that you are a liar. Now that is the truth. That statement comes from the New Testament too.
Love speaks the truth! God is love (1 John 4:18). Jesus is the Way, the Truth and the Life. That’s John 14:6. Guess who Satan is? John 8:44 describes him as the father of lies, a murder and a deceiver.
In American politics today we have a host of people who declare I’m a devout Catholic or, I’m a Baptist, Protestant etc… Please understand that my comments today are not directed at people who do not believe, but rather those who say they do and yet espouse policies and create laws that defy the truth of God’s word. My purpose in naming a few names or alluding to people you know is only to provide context for this culture war.
Do you remember hearing this quote though I don’t remember who coined it? In essentials unity, in nonessentials liberty, in all things charity? I don’t care what denomination you are from. There are certain fundamental truths that are non-negotiable.
Bottom line! Love speaks the truth. The real haters are the ones who lie against the truth and stand with Satan.
When you recognize the context of 1st John there is a huge focus on the truth versus lies and identifying those who love God. It is in this context we find 1 John 3:8 which describes the purpose Jesus was made for, which was to destroy the works of the evil one.
If the evil one speaks a lie, and he does, all the time, love requires one to step up and speak the truth, to set the captives free.
